Barito Kuala — Thousands of junior high school students in Barito Kuala are set to take part in the LearningRoom English Competition (LEC) 2026, a digital-based English competition designed to boost student engagement and participation in learning in the digital era.

Organized by the Barito Kuala Education Office in collaboration with LearningRoom, the competition will culminate in a Grand Final scheduled for May 25, 2026, at Aula Selidah, Marabahan. The program involves 62 junior high schools across the region, reflecting strong participation at the district level.

A Digital Competition Driving Student Engagement

LEC 2026 is designed as a technology-driven competition featuring three main categories: English Quiz (Cerdas Cermat), Creative Performance (Speech & Storytelling), and Singing Contest. The initial selection rounds are conducted online through the LearningRoom platform, before top participants advance to the live Grand Final.

This approach goes beyond assessing academic ability, encouraging students to develop communication skills, creativity, and confidence in using English in real-life contexts.

Local Government Commitment to Technology-Driven Education

The Head of the Barito Kuala Education Office, Mas Aryansyah, S.ST., M.Kom., emphasized that the competition is part of a broader strategy to build a more adaptive and future-ready learning ecosystem.

“This competition is not just about winning—it’s part of our effort to encourage students to actively engage in learning and confidently use English in real situations. It also shows that digital learning can be effectively implemented in regional areas,” he stated.

From Screen to Stage: Real Learning Experiences for Students

LEC 2026 offers a unique learning experience by combining digital selection with live, on-stage competition. This allows students not only to learn theoretically, but also to practice speaking and performing in real settings.

Mrs. Yulianti, an English teacher from SMP Negeri 1 Tamban, observed noticeable changes among students during the selection process:

“Through this competition, students are not just learning the material—they are becoming more confident in using English actively. We’ve seen improvements in both their participation and willingness to speak in class.”

Teachers also noted that the competition-based approach motivates students to stay engaged and consistent in their learning, offering an experience beyond traditional classroom settings.

Grand Final as a Stage for Local Talent

The Grand Final will feature top finalists from each competition category, competing for top honors and recognition. The judging panel will consist of education practitioners, representatives from the English teachers’ association (MGMP), and LearningRoom.

Beyond competition, the event serves as a platform to showcase student talent and celebrate academic achievement at the regional level.

LearningRoom’s Perspective: Encouraging Active Learning

From LearningRoom’s perspective, LEC is part of a broader initiative to promote more active and meaningful learning experiences.

Mokh. Zidny Fadlan, Senior B2G Sales Manager LearningRoom, explained:

“LEC is designed to encourage students not only to learn, but also to demonstrate what they’ve learned. When students actively participate, the learning process becomes more meaningful.”

The implementation of LEC 2026 reflects the growing role of digital technology in education, particularly in strengthening English proficiency as a global skill.
